Excelling with Spreadsheets

Numeracy

In this session we explore how to increase student numeracy skills using spreadsheets. This tool helps students process higher level thinking and can be a great introduction to very simple programming as students learn to enter forumlas. Not all the fun is just for the students. Teachers will learn how to create tools that can be used in the classroom for data collection and processing.

Starting up :
Using Smart Notebook, have teachers create a pictograph indicating each teachers preference for different subjects.

Introduction to Spreadsheets:
Brainstorm the effect of color on consumer purchasing

Are there patterns in products that include multi-colors? Do some colors influence desire for the product? How does color affect people?

Experiment:
Each teacher gets a package of M&Ms to count # of each color that appears. As each teacher reports findings, offer change for change in predictions.

Marketing Research and Presentation:
Each person in group of three takes on the role of either Historian, Food Marketing Expert or Color Psychologist. Read through the appropriate links from this site, and then discuss what you learned with others in group.

Spreadsheet Basics:
Formatting Cells: Widths, text, alignments, borders
Editing data and dealing with overlaps
Setting up for Printer
Basic formulas
Charting including formatting

Designing Tools for Teachers:
Ideas include Record Keeping, Grade Books, Checklists

Designing Tools for Students:
Ideas include Data representations, Progress Checklists for projects, Student Tracking of Grades
