Wordprocessing for Higher Thinking

Wordprocessing

In this session we explore how wordprocessing can be used to increase student thinking in the classroom. Additionally, we will look at ways teachers can create documents to help track student learning.

Starting up :
In groups of three, develop the idea of a typical assignment that might require the use of wordprocessing. The group should have a basic framwork for an assignment set up including: What will the wordprocessor allow students to do that they might not be able to do otherwise? How will the finished product demonstrate learning? What level of student thinking is required in this activity?

Grapplings Learning Spectrum:

Wordprocessing Basics:
Font manipulation, Margins, Saving, Inserting graphics and formatting

Wordprocessing Page Formatting:
Tables, Tabstops and Indents, Headers and Footers. Using these skills create forms for learning or recording data. Ideas include: Brochures, Flyer, Multiple Choice Test, Schedule, Form or Worksheet, Creating a Book...

Collaboration & Publication:
In groups of 4, discuss thoughts or ideas concerning the two issues of student collaboration and student publication of their work. Specifically, each group should develop a list of how the use of collaboration can increase student thinking and learning and how student publication changes the student focus in the learning environment.

Group Brainstorming:

  • The first list will include general activities that could benefit from students collaboratively working together in a word processing environment.
  • The second list includes different activities that encourage students to publish their work to some authentic audience.
