Lights, Camera, Action: Analyzing Student Videos

Using the Jigsaw activity and worksheet, teachers will evaluate each of the 5 videos listed below and record their observations on the worksheet.

Movie making options for this session:

1. A Teaching Digital Story: "I teach because..." or "My experiences in eMINTS..." or "Teaching moments I will never forget..."
2. An Instructional Movie: for use when teaching a concept that could be enhanced by the use of a video.
3. An Instructional Introduction Movie: A movie that acts as a hook that introduces a lesson. This is particularly useful in engaging students in an inquiry-based lesson.
4. A Poetic Interpretation
5. An Advertisement or Public Service Announcement: for possible use as an example for students of a product they may make for a unit.

Movie Making Tips:

• Outline or Story Map ideas
• Write a script and develop a storyboard
• Create a folder to hold all of your movie with subfolders for each type of element
• Do not move elements once you have inported them into your video creation software
• Follow copyright policies for all video, images and audio
• Resize images for a TV screen to a 6X4 resolution such as 640X480
• Not counting special effects, Max of 3-4 seconds on each still image
• Max of 5-15 seconds of a movie or video clip
• Record voiceovers in 10 second spans
• Include rolling credits to cite all media and information sources
• Keep transitions simple and consistent
• Add music and sound effects last to make timing easier
