Evaluating and Using Internet Resources

In this session we will look at how teachers can help students evaluate the truth or falsehood of resources on the Internet. We will also look at ways you can check up on the source of websites and we will explore copyright laws and how they apply to the education community.

Starting up with the basics:
Is Santa Claus a Lie?

Truth, Opinion or Fabrication?:
Check out the links below from the point of view of a student in your class. Is the information factual? Is the presentation professional? Is it believable?

How Literate Are We?:
Visit Alan November's site and take the quiz
If you finish the quiz early, please explore the other links II to VII

So How Do We Evaluate?
Discuss the following questions from both the Teacher's and the Student's perspective.

  • What does it mean to “evaluate” information?
  • What skills are needed to be able to evaluate information?
  • What criteria do teachers/students use to evaluate a website?

Possible skils include...

  • Truncation of a URL or what the URL can tell us
  • Finding the owner of the site (easywhois, alexa)
  • Turning the hands of time backwards (Wayback Machine)

Copyright and Fair Use:
View this cute little film highlighting a bit of the history and practice of Copyright Laws

Check out Creative Commons Laws and what they do and don't allow

Creating Evaluation Tools:
Teachers work together creating tools that students can use to evaluate information they find on the Internet
